The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian

Forew. by Marcus Zusak

(2)
An all-new edition of the tragicomic smash hit which stormed the New York Times bestseller charts, now featuring an introduction from Markus Zusak.
In his first book for young adults, Sherman Alexie tells the story of Junior, a budding cartoonist who leaves his school on the Spokane Indian Reservation to attend an all-white high school. This heartbreaking, funny, and beautifully written tale, featuring poignant drawings that reflect the character's art, is based on the author's own experiences. It chronicles contemporary adolescence as seen through the eyes of one Native American boy.
'Excellent in every way' Neil Gaiman
Illustrated in a contemporary cartoon style by Ellen Forney.

The type of the book is a teenage novel. This book tells the story of Arnold ´´Junior´´ Spirit, the main character. He lives on the Spokane Indian reservation in Wellpinit,USA. Junior was born with 42 teeth, very big hands and feet and water on the brain. His reservation is very poor, most of the Indians try to forget their pain with the help of alcohol. He decides to leave his hopeless home and he starts a new life at Reardan High School, for whites, where he is the only Indian. The funny style makes the sad topic more comfortable to read. We like the story very much because the author writes in a funny way and comics help to understand the book.He did a great job, because he faced with big problems, but wrapped it in a beautiful story. We would recommend it to everybody who is interested in the Indian lifes. We wouldn´t recommend it to anybody who prefers action stories or who has learnd English for less than 4 years because than it might be difficult to understand the book.

In our opinion Sherman Alexie did an excelent job with "The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-time Indian". We read this book at school and got really impressed by the messages and emotions it contains. This semi-real diary is very interesting and easily takes your attention away from anything else. The book is about a young Indian boy, Junior, who struggles between two worlds; the Indian and the white . The only negative part is the strong language it contains, but that doesn't harm te quality of the story. We warmly recommend you to buy this book, because of its humor, messages, emotions and very creative cartoons. TEAM Bana Evangelina Nevena

The book tells us that everyone is his own futures Blacksmith, like the saying says. The story of this book is told in the view of a 14 year old guy named Arnold “junior” Spirit. Arnold is tall, skinny, funny, intelligent and draws comics, very funny comics. So Arnold lives in the Spokane Indian reservation, where all people are poor, the most adults are alcoholics and the school books are older than 30 years old. All kids in the reservation annoy Arnold expect one, his best friend Rowdy. He is the opposite of Arnold even strong, not really intelligent and he doesn’t laughs, just Arnold can make him laughing. As Arnold detects that his school book is over 30 years old, he sees that he have no future prospects in the reservation. Because of that he chances the school and goes to the neighbour farm town school, where Arnold is the only Indian. Rowdy hates Arnold since he left the reservation school. At the new school all boys want to punch Arnold but he defends himself against this boys. Despite the strokes of fate, which hit him, he goes his way and discovers his talent for basketball and girls. Arnold takes his life with his acute humour and his wonderful cartoons make this book to a must read book. The writing style of Sherman Alexie isn’t to difficult to understand and thru the slang words, witch the author used, effects that the story is authentic. I vote this book with 5 stars and advise it to all advanced English learners. This book is a must read book!!
