Hij komt elke keer, net als Christo met zijn inpakprojecten, in de problemen als hij officieel toestemming vraagt bij de autoriteiten, en later als de winkeliers in de omgeving bijvoorbeeld gaan protesteren tegen de woonkamer die om een lantaarnpaal heen is gebouwd. Het is kunst waar ik elke keer weer bij in de lach schiet, juist omdat hij zo onverwacht is, en hij je op het verkeerde been zet. Cultural Hijack: Rethinking Intervention is een boek dat vol staat met dit soort projecten en kunst, en het is een prikkelend en inspirerend boek geworden, vooral door de vele voorbeelden. De teksten zijn soms wat te pretentieus wat mij betreft, want waar sommige kunstenaars er voor mijn gevoel vooral op uit zijn je te ontregelen of je gewoon een vrolijke dag te bezorgen proberen de essayschrijvers overal diepere lagen aan te brengen. Op zich is daar natuurlijk niets mis mee, ook anarchistische kunst mag geduid worden en in haar context geplaatst, en soms worden er ook wel degelijk zinnige dingen beweerd, maar wat dit boek vooral zo leuk maakt is dat je al bladerend en kijkend telkens weer in de lach schiet. En dat je als kunstenaar zelf sterk de neiging krijgt om anoniem op pad te gaan en ingrepen te doen in het stedelijke landschap die de voorbijganger in de lach doen schieten. En als ze daarna ook nog even gaan nadenken over de serieuzere zaken die de kunstenaar aankaart is dat mooi meegenomen, want wat dit boek goed aantoont is dat humor en kunst goed samengaan, en dat humor en ernst vaak ook goed samengaan. Want je schiet in de lach en gaat dan toch nadenken waarom je eigenlijk in de lach schiet.
