As a boy in Brooklyn's Red Hook projects, James McBride knew his mother was different. But when he asked about it, she'd simply say 'I'm light-skinned.' Later he wondered if he was different too, and asked his mother if he was black or white. 'You're a human being,' she snapped. 'Educate yourself or you'll be a nobody!' And when James asked what colour God was, she said 'God is the colour of water.' As an adult, McBride finally persuaded his mother to tell her story - the story of a rabbi's daughter, born in Poland and raised in the South, who fled to Harlem, married a black man, founded a Baptist church, and put twelve children through college.

When I came across this book I honestly didn’t think that it would fall into the category of worth reading. Books with so many praise reviews on them don’t hook me normally. The blurp didn’t reveal all that much, what it disclosed was at the end enough to take it home.
And now having read the whole in one go, the feeling of disappointment never came up. With every page read, I got the reassurance that this book deserves every minute of my time. The time-split chapters are in my opinion not disruptive, as they are connected to each other. They add explanatory details to the biography.
Throughout the book, you feel the emotions seeping out. The author writes in a way that connects you to the story, so captivating that you can’t stop. It’s a very heartfelt story about a woman who manages her life in a remarkable way, fighting for one thing, her family.
In this book, things are revealed to you that make you think and see things differently about life. I often had to shake my head about the strokes of fate that this family had to suffer. And yet giving up was never an issue, faith also plays a big role.
Now, coming back to the praised reviews mentioned I can say that they are truly deserved. And I am glad that I took it from the shelf. It is definitely worth giving it a try.
