Beach Read

"Original, sparkling bright, and layered with feeling..."-Sally Thorne, author of The Hating Game

A romance writer who no longer believes in love and a literary writer stuck in a rut engage in a summer-long challenge that may just upend everything they believe about happily ever afters.

Augustus Everett is an acclaimed author of literary fiction. January Andrews writes bestselling romance. When she pens a happily ever after, he kills off his entire cast.

They're polar opposites.

In fact, the only thing they have in common is that for the next three months, they're living in neighboring beach houses, broke, and bogged down with writer's block.

Until, one hazy evening, one thing leads to another and they strike a deal designed to force them out of their creative ruts: Augustus will spend the summer writing something happy, and January will pen the next Great American Novel. She'll take him on field trips worthy of any rom-com montage, and he'll take her to interview surviving members of a backwoods death cult (obviously). Everyone will finish a book and no one will fall in love. Really.

January is a pretty positive person who believes in happy endings and true love whilst Gus is rather cynical and doesn’t trust people easily. When both novelists end up living next to each other and are struck with writer’s block, they decide to help each other out and while they’re at it, why not make a challenge out of it? When I first started reading „Beach Read“ I expected it to be a feel-good rom-com that would primarily make me laugh. But it is so much more. Both January and Augustus have to deal with things from their pasts that have either shaped them in less than ideal ways or rattled their world view recently. Not only do they have deadlines to meet, but some healing to do and they eventually agree to help each other out with both. I love how their relationship evolves and adore not only their mutual support but also their dynamic and banter. I also appreciate the issues that are brought up in this novel and how they’re dealt with - grief, disappointment and lack of trust being among them. While it is pretty angsty at times, this book is also fun, full of love and strong friendships and a lot of personal growth. If you enjoy romantic novels that aren’t just fun, but also offer some depth, „Beach Read“ might be the book for you.
