Robert Neville lost everything due to a pandemic - his daughter, his wife, his sanity. In the daytime he explores the remainders of the city and takes care that his house is safe, but in the nighttime he hides inside his house and hopes that the night passes as quickly as possible, as a bunch of vampires, including one of his former neighbours and friends, try to seduce him to come outside in order to devour him. Robert is immune to this vampire virus and tries his best to understand it and even hopes to find an antidote to end his unfortunate existence full of loneliness. One time he finds a dog and thinks to have found a long desired partner, another time he sees a woman in the bright daylight and for a split second he has serious hopes for the end of his torture, but sadly things come differently... Richard Matheson is a wonderful author that manages to make the reader feel the horrors of lonliness, despair and insanity that his characters have to endure. Especially considering the time in which this story was written makes it even more impressive: It was first published in 1954, being one of the very first post-apocalyptic vampire/zombie stories and to my mind, none of the later ones can keep up with this book! Even though many might think to know the story, because they have watched the movie starring Will Smith, I would still totally recommend reading this book, as it has so much more depth and meaning! Especially the film's ending is a bit dull compared to the book and conveys a feeling so completely different, the book is just not done justice! I don't want to spoil anything, so all I can say is: if you want to understand the meaning behind the titlegiving sentence "I am legend", read this book!

Packende Endzeitstimmung...

Absolute Leseempfehlung!
