Sophie has the great misfortune of being the eldest of three daughters, destined to fail miserably should she ever leave home to seek her fate. But when she unwittingly attracts the ire of the Witch of the Waste, Sophie finds herself under a horrid spell that transforms her into an old lady. Her only chance at breaking it lies in the ever-moving castle in the hills: the Wizard Howl's castle. Along the way, she discovers that there's far more to Howl-and herself-than first meets the eye.

Anders als der Ghibli-Film, aber genauso liebenswert und spannend. Lies sich so gut lesen, dass ich die letzten 300 Seiten an einem Stück weggelesen habe.

In a world where the first-born is destined to fail miserably, Sophie finds herself to be the most unfortunate of them all. Having unknowingly brought the Witch of the Waste's wrath upon herself, she is suddenly turned into an old woman. Her only chance at breaking the curse lies in allying herself with Howl and the other inhabitants of his moving castle. The only problem is that he is rumored to eat girl's hearts by the dozen - surely she will be safe, being an elderly woman and all, right? To be honest, I don't quite get why this book is so popular. The blurb sounds interesting enough, but the reading experience is kind of lacking, in my opinion at least. The story drags along quite a bit with hardly anything happening at all. Things that are supernatural or unusual are always just apathetically accepted, but never explained. Only at the very end, the author reveals how everything is connected and even then it's pretty vague and hard to comprehend in its entirety. Sadly, even the characters couldn't save this book for me. They are bland, not particularly likeable and don't evolve in the slightest. Obviously, "Howl's Moving Castle" won't find its way onto may Favorites-bookshelf, but I think that a lot of younger readers will enjoy it. It's a good pick if you need something with a managable amount of characters and a not overly confusing storyline.

Fantastisch, wie erwartet!
