Romantic, liberating and totally addictive, Fifty Shades of Grey is a novel that will obsess you, possess you, and stay with you for ever. When literature student Anastasia Steele interviews successful entrepreneur Christian Grey, she finds him very attractive and deeply intimidating. Convinced that their meeting went badly, she tries to put him out of her mind - until he turns up at the store where she works part-time, and invites her out. Unworldly and innocent, Ana is shocked to find she wants this man. And, when he warns her to keep her distance, it only makes her want him more. But Grey is tormented by inner demons, and consumed by the need to control. As they embark on a passionate love affair, Ana discovers more about her own desires, as well as the dark secrets Grey keeps hidden away from public view.

"The cream of the crop." Independent

E L James is an incurable romantic and a self-confessed fan-girl. After twenty-five years of working in television, she decided to pursue a childhood dream and write stories that readers could take to their hearts. The result was the controversial and sensuous romance Fifty Shades of Grey and its two sequels, Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed. In 2015, she published the no. 1 bestseller Grey, the story of Fifty Shades of Grey from the perspective of Christian Grey, and in 2017, the chart-topping Darker, the second part of the Fifty Shades story from Christian’s point of view. Her books have been published in forty-eight languages and have sold more than 150 million copies worldwide.

E L James has been recognised as one of Time magazine’s ‘Most Influential People in the World’ and Publishers Weekly’s ‘Person of the Year’. Fifty Shades of Grey stayed on the New York Times Best Seller List for 133 consecutive weeks. Fifty Shades Freed won the Goodreads Choice Award (2012), and Fifty Shades of Grey was selected as one of the 100 Great Reads, as voted by readers, in PBS’s The Great American Read (2018). Darker has been long-listed for the 2019 International DUBLIN Literary Award.

She co-produced for Universal Studios the Fifty Shades movies, which made more than a billion dollars at the box office. The third instalment, Fifty Shades Freed, won the People’s Choice Award for Drama in 2018.

E L James is blessed with two wonderful sons and lives with her husband, the novelist and screenwriter Niall Leonard, and their West Highland terriers in the leafy suburbs of West London.

This is a short version of my review, to view the full version go to: In an era where sex is on the forefront of pretty much every person's mind over the age of 15, it is not surprising at all that a book like this is a bestseller. However, I must pose one question: Do you even think before declaring such a book as "good"? While it is admittedly quite well-written, Fifty Shades of Grey is a story about a foolish, silly, naive and, quite frankly, self-centered young woman who finds herself intimidated and intrigued by a handsome millionaire she is supposed to interview. For whatever obscure reason, both are drawn to each other and soon find themselves in bed together, just as these things happen. It sounds like a cute, cheesy romance novel, at first. But even in the beginning the reader feels there is something not quite right. At about page 70, I got the impression that this was not an actual book, but a mediocre Twilight-Fanfiction with different names, and it got worse and worse, until, at about page 200, I was sure about my assumption. An assumption proved to be true after consulting Google after reading the novel. In this story, the seemingly cold, stoic, handsome Christian Grey seems to have taken the roll of a sadist Edward Cullen. Other characters are not as obvious, but it is still very easy to see the semblance of them to Twilight-Characters. Aside from the fact that the characters are a bit of a failure, there is also the plot to talk about. Or rather, the lack of plot. Most of the time, there is sex, negotiations about sex and talking to others about sex to the point that it gets boring, even for someone who loves reading porn. I also wish to comment on the complete absence of dignity, especially with the main Character. Not only does Ana accept presents that are probably worth several million US-Dollars from the man she sleeps with, but also does she let him order her around, give her grades for her behaviour and partially dictate the way she lives. While I understand that a book is not neccessarily bad because one dislikes a character, it is still quite infuriating. Moving on to the next point: The dialogues. I can sum up all the dialogues in just a few short words: Christian giving orders; people talking about sex; inane small talk. It is disgusting to know that so many people enjoy a book like that. Seriously people, there is so much written porn out there, GOOD porn, with characters that actually possess the ability to think and act accordingly to logical observations and thoughts. I do not see the need of buying a book like Fifty Shades of Grey for that kind of pleasure.

Hinreissend und romantisch! Unbedingt lesen.
