** THE SUNDAY TIMES NO. 1 BESTSELLER **

Discover the dystopian novel behind the award-winning TV series before you read the 2019 Booker Prize-winning sequel The Testaments

'I believe in the resistance as I believe there can be no light without shadow; or rather, no shadow unless there is also light.'

Offred is a Handmaid in The Republic of Gilead, a religious totalitarian state in what was formerly known as the United States. She is placed in the household of The Commander, Fred Waterford - her assigned name, Offred, means 'of Fred'. She has only one function: to breed. If Offred refuses to enter into sexual servitude to repopulate a devastated world, she will be hanged. Yet even a repressive state cannot eradicate hope and desire. As she recalls her pre-revolution life in flashbacks, Offred must navigate through the terrifying landscape of torture and persecution in the present day, and between two men upon which her future hangs.

Masterfully conceived and executed, this haunting vision of the future places Margaret Atwood at the forefront of dystopian fiction.

'As relevant today as it was when Atwood wrote it...no television event has hit such a nerve ...' Guardian

"One of Atwood’s finest pieces of work serves as a great reminder of what humanity is capable of."

"Out of a narrative shadowed by terror, gleam sharp perceptions, brilliant intense images and sardonic wit" -- Peter Kemp Independent "The Handmaid's Tale is both a superlative exercise in science fiction and a profoundly felt moral story" -- Angela Carter "Moving, vivid and terrifying. I only hope it's not prophetic" -- Conor Cruise O'Brien The Listener "The images of brilliant emptiness are one of the most striking aspects of this novel about totalitarian blindness...the effect is chilling" -- Linda Taylor Sunday Times "Powerful...admirable" -- Robert Irwin Time Out

In a dystopian not so faraway future, Offred is a handmaid, one of the last fertile women in this society. As such, she is assigned to one officer to mate, conceive and carry out a child. The officers are often married but since their women cannot reproduce it falls under the duty of the bright-red dressed handmaids to repopulate the civilisation. She is treated well as long as she is able to fulfill her duty but always under the threat to be exiled to the feared and brutal colonies the moment she is no longer useful to society. Margaret Atwood's „The Handmaid's Tale“ contains the story of the handmaid Offred but also of her memories before the regime took away women's rights and put her in the position she now is in - memories of her husband Luke and her daughter whose name is never revealed. One cannot tell much more as to not to spoiler the story of Offred too much. Atwood created a dystopia which is a possible reality in the future, for the fight for women's rights is not over yet, and what was already archieved could be taken away again if each and everyone of us is not careful about it. This handmaid's tale should sink deep into every woman young or old and I highly recommend reading this book!

A story so breathtaking and deep, that I can hardly describe how much it moved me! That stunning and full of upsetting events that it left me speechless.

Achtung, man könnte Albträume davon bekommen… Ein Klassiker, nicht ohne Grund.
