It was published in 2005. The novel deals with Miles Halter, the protagonist, and his first year at Culver Creek a boarding school in Alabama. He is tired of his life at home in Florida so he decides to go to Culver Creek while hoping for a new exciting life. As soon as he gets there, he meets his roommate Chip Martin also known as “the Colonel” and Alaska Young. They are both main characters of the novel. After a while they come closer and Miles falls in love with Alaska, but she has a boyfriend. Alaska is one of the most interesting characters. She is passionate, self confident and knows exactly what she wants even if her past was difficult. She has a lot of secrets and while reading the book, you will find out more and more information about her and her past. After something terrible happens, Miles loses contact with his friends at Culver Creek. They don’t know how to handle the situation and it‘s really difficult for everyone, especially for Miles who blames himself for what happened. When you read the book you will find some really relatable things and also characters who all have some problems we maybe know from our own lives. The characters seem so real and you can really understand what they are going through, also the plot really kept one reading. At the beginning one might think the book mainly deals with love, typical teenage life and so on, but it turns out to be so much more. It’s about adventures, making hard decisions, ask yourself important questions about life and what to expect for the future and also difficult things about love. The novel is recommendable for younger people who find themselves in similar situations since the book’s potrait of teenage life is relateable.

Das Buch bringt einem manchmal zum schmunzeln, stimmt einem manchmal nachdenklich und liest sich sehr einfach. Ein sehr unterhaltsamer und gelungener Roman.

One of my favorite books of all time!
