My expectations were too high

I have always cared more for Greek mythology than for sorcery, so I expected "Percy Jackson" to be more my type of book than "Harry Potter". Alas, turns out: no. There are two reasons. First of all, I like Harry Potter better as a character. Yes, he can be cocky and self-righteous at times but he is not exactly a good-for-noth... I have always cared more for Greek mythology than for sorcery, so I expected "Percy Jackson" to be more my type of book than "Harry Potter". Alas, turns out: no. There are two reasons. First of all, I like Harry Potter better as a character. Yes, he can be cocky and self-righteous at times but he is not exactly a good-for-nothing. Percy Jackson is redeemed to a degree later on, but at first he is not particularly likeable. Also I take issue with some of Rick Riordan's politics. Sure, probably J.K. Rowling is the more problematic person with her transphobic views and her self-congratulatory declaration that a main character of the Harry Potter franchise was gay - but she only revealed that after his death and also gave no foundation to that when she could have done so in a later work. Still, Riordan comes across as fairly patriotic and patriarchal here, with the US being the undisputed center of civilization and the big three deities being all-male - Athena and i beg to differ! My favorite part of the book is Hades, who is both enigmatic and somewhat underappreciated. I might come across the second volume at some point. But i won't hurry.

Beschreibung
Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief is the first bestselling book in Rick Riordan's phenomenally successful Percy Jackson series.
Half boy. Half God. ALL Hero.
Look, I didn't want to be a half-blood. I never asked to be the son of a Greek God.
I was just a normal kid, going to school, playing basketball, skateboarding. The usual. Until I accidentally vaporized my maths teacher. Now I spend my time battling monsters and generally trying to stay alive.
This is the one where Zeus, God of the Sky, thinks I've stolen his lightning bolt - and making Zeus angry is a very bad idea.
