Garden of Theophrastus
Peter Huchel (1903???1981) wrote amidst the political turmoil of modern Germany. Yet his particular style of realistic, lyrical verse, often deeply concerned with the people and landscape of the rural north German region in which he grew up, evaded easy categorization, whether in political or artistic terms. Translated by Michael Hamburger-a close friend of Huchel's-Anvil's bilingual edition of selected poems will help to bring this distinguished poet to a larger English-speaking readership.
