Great sequel to the first book, tragic and sometimes dark but a good read. It took me 6 days to read it and it was worth every minute.

Intriguing characters and witty dialogues, yet dark and dramatic, full of twists and turns

The plot is thickening in the second instalment of "The Dark Artifices". Malcom Fade and Annabel’s past is revealed, the members of the Scholomance are not what the protagonists would have expected, and their own institute, their home, is not safe anymore, forcing Emma and the Blackthorns to flee. The past catches up in various ... The plot is thickening in the second instalment of "The Dark Artifices". Malcom Fade and Annabel’s past is revealed, the members of the Scholomance are not what the protagonists would have expected, and their own institute, their home, is not safe anymore, forcing Emma and the Blackthorns to flee. The past catches up in various forms and Emma and Julian have to fight against their feelings for each other, desperately trying to find a way to end their parabatai bond while struggling to protect their loved ones. Clare beautifully captures different types of sexualities and, with this series, also features an autistic protagonist, Ty, who is also one of my favourite characters. I also very much like the development between him and Kit, the lost Herondale (because we all know every series has to have a Herondale as protagonist). Sexuality and disabilities are problematised, of course, but the characters are still not defined merely over being gay, bisexual or autistic. It is just one facet of their characters, which makes the books refreshing and enjoyable to read. Diana Wrayburn is an intriguing character as well. It annoyed me a bit that she suddenly had a love interest too (because who in this book does not), but I found her plot line to be one of the best and definitely a reason to recommend this book. Her secret that prevents her from taking over the institute is revealed in this instalment and, without spoiling, I just want to say that I really did not see this coming and almost cried over it. In addition, comical relief and funny remarks are still as good as I was used to from previous instalments. I almost choked when Kit tried to show how much he defies the shadowhunters by eating a lot of cookies instead of exercising to gain muscles. I generally see Clare’s strength in descriptions and interactions between the characters. I especially loved the way she introduces the seven Riders and their whole character design. Another impressive figure is the Unseelie King, who, before he even did anything, intrigued me through his description alone – a very promising antagonist. Of course, the last twenty pages of the book completely turned around everything, involving major plot twists, and I can’t wait for the final instalment to see how Clare is going to resolve the thickening plot…

Der zweite Band der Reihe ist düsterer als der Erste und auch der bisherigen Shadowhunter Bücher. Klare Thematik in dem Band ist Verlust eines geliebten Menschen. Cassandra Clare hat in der Zeit, in der sie an diesem Buch gearbeitet hat einen geliebten Menschen verloren, was sich auch im Roman wiederspiegelt. Da einige Charakter... Der zweite Band der Reihe ist düsterer als der Erste und auch der bisherigen Shadowhunter Bücher. Klare Thematik in dem Band ist Verlust eines geliebten Menschen. Cassandra Clare hat in der Zeit, in der sie an diesem Buch gearbeitet hat einen geliebten Menschen verloren, was sich auch im Roman wiederspiegelt. Da einige Charaktere sterben. Es gibt auch Rückblicke zu Malcom und Annabell Blackthorn - da wird auch noch mal deutlich, wie sehr Malcom der Verlust geschmerzt hat. Aber man merkt auch wie andere Charaktere mit verlorenen Beziehungen zu kämpfen haben, aber auch mit dem Tot eines geliebten Menschen. In dem Buch sterben mehrere Charaktere - einer opfert sich, damit seiner Familie nichts passiert. Einer als gerechte Strafe und zwei sterben im letzten Kapitel, im Höhepunkt dieses Buches. Man lernt in dem Band auch noch etwas mehr von Kit kennen. Er freundet sich mit Ty und Livvy an. Alte Bekannte tauchen auch wieder auf, Jace und Clary haben einen kurzen Auftritt. Magnus und Alec, samt Nachwuchs haben eine größere Rolle. Auch Robert Lightwood taucht kurz auf. Es gibt Szenen am dunkeln Hof, man erfährt noch etwas mehr zu Kierans Hintergründen. Das Buch macht einfach Spaß gelesen zu werden. Schön finde ich die Umsetzung von Ty, Cassy gibt sich sehr fühl Mühe wie sie ihn schreibt, da es nicht so leicht ist einen autistischen Charakter zu schreiben der nicht zu Klichehaft ist. Gut gelungen finde ich auch die eine Szene mit Diana und Gwyn (möchte nichts näher dazu schreiben, da ich nicht spoilern möchte) - die Szene ist klasse, sie kommt richtig gut rüber und wirkt nicht übertrieben. Man kann diese Szene richtig nachvollziehen. Man erfährt auch einiges über Annabells Vergangenheit, als sie noch gelebt hat. Interessant fand ich auch den Ansatz der Kohorte. Nachdem Valentine und der Kreis alle Unterweltler vernichten wollte. Ist die Kohorte dafür, dass man alle Unterweltler registriert und markiert. Ich war überrascht so eine Thematik in einem YA zu finden. Ich frage mich allerdings, ob die jungen amerikanischen Leser den Zusammenhang zu tatsächlichen historischen Ereignissen ziehen können, oder ob es für sie nur Fantasy ist. In dem zweiten Band der Reihe sind einige neue Aspekte in die Geschichte gekommen, es gab einige Wendepunkte und es arbeitet sich alles zu einem Showdown im dritten Band hin. Der aber leider erst in zwei Jahren kommt. Das letzte Wort in dem Roman ist Hour - was als verweis auf den ersten band von The last Hour gesehen werden kann (das nur am Rande). Ich bin gespannt wie sich das alles zum Finalenband hin auflöst.
