Lauren James' "The Next Together" is the wonderful first installment of her duology about a couple that is reincarnated time and time again just to be tragically separated shortly after they find each other.
This book follows four timelines which are set in 1745, 1854, 2019 and 2039. What do all of them have in common? In each and every one of them Katherine and Matthew meet and fall deeply in love. Why can't they just live their lives in peace, though? They live through wars, rebellions and conspiracies with their inputs being vital to the outcomes, but without getting a happy ending themselves. What is the point of it all and will they ever be able to live their lives freely?
I very much enjoyed reading this book and can't wait to get my hands on the sequel as I am very curious to find out how the story continues. I like how the storylines are crafted individually and the way they converge later on. The dynamic between the two protagonists I absolutely adore, they are just so sweet and witty and complement each other perfectly. I also think that Lauren James has chosen very interesting historic events for Katherine and Matthew to meddle with.
The only thing I am not that big of a fan of, purely because I am not able to completely comprehend it at the moment, is the time-travelling towards the end of the book. I am not sure it makes total sense.
All in all, I absolutely love "The Next Together" and recommend it to teenagers aged 14 and up as well as to adults. If you enjoy a good love story with a historical background as well as a sprinkle of fantasy, you'll love this duology. A great addition would also be Diana Gabaldon's "Outlander" Saga.
