The Humans

(1)
THERE'S NO PLACE LIKE HOME.
OR IS THERE?
After an 'incident' one wet Friday night where Professor Andrew Martin is found walking naked through the streets of Cambridge, he is not feeling quite himself. Food sickens him. Clothes confound him. Even his loving wife and teenage son are repulsive to him. He feels lost amongst a crazy alien species and hates everyone on the planet. Everyone, that is, except Newton - and he's a dog.
What could possibly make someone change their mind about the human race. . . ?
Rezension
"Matt Haig's hilarious novel puts our species on the spot." (Guardian)

The book tells the story the mathematician Andrew Martin, who is not really the best husband and father, as he is obsessed with finding the solution to one of the biggest mathematical problems of our time, which eventually he solves. Unfortunately, a highly intelligent alien life form does not want the humans to know the solution, as it would enable them to reach immortality and therefore be a huge threat. Consequently, they send one of them to earth to replace Professor Martin in order to get rid of everything and everyone, who knows something about this mathematical solution, and that is where the story starts. At first, the alien imposter has some difficulties with the humans’ habits, like wearing clothes or feeling emotions, but after some time he starts to enjoy being a human. So instead of doing his work and destroying all the evidence of the found solution, he grows fond of his new-found family, especially of the old family dog, gives his best to be a good husband and father and tries to make up for everything the Professor has done to them. But naturally, his alien fellows do not like that… This story tells very accurately what it means to be a human and makes the reader rethink life and the capability to feel emotions, such as love. This book makes you laugh, it makes you cry and it is full of wisdom! It is also one of the most beautiful stories I ever had the pleasure to read. “There was no such thing as impossible. I knew that, because I also knew that everything was impossible, and so the only possibilities in life were impossibilities.”
