The Rest of Us Just Live Here

Six starred reviews!

A bold and irreverent YA novel that powerfully reminds us that there are many different types of remarkable, The Rest of Just Live Here is from novelist Patrick Ness, author of the Carnegie Medal- and Kate Greenaway Medal-winning A Monster Calls and the critically acclaimed Chaos Walking trilogy.

What if you aren't the Chosen One? The one who's supposed to fight the zombies, or the soul-eating ghosts, or whatever the heck this new thing is, with the blue lights and the death?

What if you're like Mikey? Who just wants to graduate and go to prom and maybe finally work up the courage to ask Henna out before someone goes and blows up the high school. Again.

Because sometimes there are problems bigger than this week's end of the world, and sometimes you just have to find the extraordinary in your ordinary life.

Even if your best friend is worshipped by mountain lions.

It's okay to not be okay

The way he brings characters to life never cease to amaze me. This particular book focuses on ordinary people, living in an extraordinary world. (Just imagine Harry Potter was real but you're just a side character, that's this book) Mikey has not only to deal with graduation but also with his anxiety and OCD which seems to get worse by the day. While his friends seem to get on with their lifes and are up to greater things, Mikey feels left behind. I found Mikey a very relateable character, his story hit very close home, but it shows us that it is okay to not feel okay all the time, the importance of friendship and talking and opening up to the people you love. Great book.

I don't see the point

I'm sorry to say this, since so many people seem to love Patrick Ness, but I don't like his writing and this book was kind of pointless. Nothing really happened aside from the fact that some people (not the main character) saved the world, that grown-ups don't listen to their kids (already knew that) and that a bunch of kids graduated from Highschool (which happens all the time). It was nice reading about a character with OCD and how he and the people around him dealt with that. The parts with the psychologist were also pretty nice because it's important to tell people that there is no shame in needing help and being sick and that psychological issues are not less important or shameful in any way. I don't care much for romance and while I think this book isn't supposed to be one, it focuses so much on the main characters woes of trying to get the girl. It was exhausting and boring and he was so whiny and jealous and petty that I really couldn't bring myself to care much about him. There's also that whole bisexuality (or maybe pansexuality) thing that is heavily implied but never actually voiced. I don't understand why authors won't simply make their characters notice that they are bisexual and accept that label. It is obviously absolutely okay to not know your label and not wanting to label yourself, but considering how often the main character mentioned that he had sex with his male best friend and enjoyed it and also encouraged it, it wouldn't have been such a big step to make him label himself. I couldn't connect to the characters in the way I need to to enjoy a book and like I said, there also wasn't really a plot and the writing wasn't great either, so this book simply didn't work for me.

Refreshingly Different

"The Rest of Us Just Live Here" is a fun and quick read that for once focuses on the non-special teenagers rather than the chosen ones who go around saving the world. Mikey and his friends have four weeks left before graduation. Just four weeks before the wind will scatter them in different directions and everything will begin to change. While the indie kids use this time to fight some evil supernatural enemy, Mikey and his friends have to deal with more personal issues. Teen angst, psychological issues, love and above all friendship are the most prominent topics featured in this refreshing YA novel. I like how the author focuses on the underdogs rather than the heroes and shows that everyone has their load to bear. Mikey, Henna, Mel and Jared are very likeable and relatable characters and make up a tight-knit group of friends some might envy for their group dynamic. Alongside the issues addressed in this book - which, to me, is done very authentically, considering its length - I also appreciate the little summaries of the supernatural goings-on at the beginning of each chapter. They are just hilarious - even though they kind of make fantasy novels look ridiculous. Patrick Ness hasn't written a story that has never been there before, but his writing style and structure offer a different kind of reading experience than most of us are used to. Recommended!
