John Galsworthy

John Galsworthy (1867 - 1933) war ein englischer Schriftsteller und Dramatiker. Er war ein Sohn wohlhabender Eltern, und deswegen studierte er am New College der Universität Oxford Jura, aber hatte er keine Lust Jurist zu werden. Später kennenlernte Galsworthy den polnischen Schriftsteller Joseph Conrad, der sein Interesse an der Literatur weckte. Sein erstes Schauspiel "The Silver Box" wurde 1906 mit Erfolg aufgeführt. Im gleichen Jahr schrieb er "Der reiche Mann", den ersten Teil der erfolgreichen Reihe "Die Forsyte-Saga". "Die Forsyte-Saga" gilt als ein Klassiker der modernen englischen Literatur. Im Jahr 1932 erhielt Galsworthy den Literaturnobelpreis. Die Werke von Galsworthy zeichnen sich durch Kritik am britischen Klassensystem, Materialismus der Oberschicht aus, und auch der Autor porträtiert oft verheiratete Frauen als unglückliche.
