Robert A Caro wurde 1935 in New York geboren. Für The Power Broker, sein Buch über den amerikanischen Stadtplaner Robert Moses, erhielt der Autor seinen ersten Pulitzer-Preis. Seit den späten siebziger Jahren arbeitet Caro an einer mittlerweile auf fünf Bände angelegten Lyndon-B.-Johnson-Biografie. Für den dritten Band, Master of the Senate, wurde er 2003 erneut mit dem Pulitzer-Preis ausgezeichnet.
