Meine letzte Rezension Rainbringer: Zora Neale Hurston Against The Lovecraftian Mythos von Edward M. Erdelac
Zora Neale Hurston, a person I didn't know anything about before this. Actually I wanted to read some fiction adressing hoodo/vodoo, picked this up and got rewarded with interconnected stories, all featuring Zora, about the U.S. American south around the 1930s, the mentioned spiritual/religious practices and the meeting of diverse cultures and of course the course of her life. And of course the splash of cosmic/eldritch horror that Erdelac, like in his Merkabah Rider series, wove belivable into the struggles of the time. A cool, humane heroine which I loved to listen while she, not without some humour, tells us her adventures as an anthropologist, a writer, a hoodoo initiate, an adventurer, just Zora Neale Hurston...

Zora Neale Hurston, a person I didn't know anything about before this.     Take a dark academia book. Change all the lessons into something incomprehensible, the tasks into something literally impossible. Then imagine it writen by a Russian/Ukrainian Kafka, or maybe Murakami. Kind of philosophical in a way that questions our understanding and tangents the unexpressionable, unthinkable. And amidst all of this, somehow wholesome, a world you don't want to leave, even if it scares you. A book that not only makes you question your existence but existence and the rules that seem unbreakable itself.

    Das Meer der Aswang

    Die Geschichte eines Mädchens, welches sich in ein Krokodil verwandelt. Eine Sage, oder eben doch keine? Und was soll das eigentlich? Der Autor schreibt fantastisch. Zum Teil als würde er einen direkt ansprechen, ein andermal als erzähle er ein Märchen, dann wieder nimmt er Bezug aufs Heute, als Historiker, dann... Ein Buch das einen beim Ende eines jeden Satzes gespannt auf den nächsten warten und sich fragen lässt, was jetzt wohl unerwartetes kommt. Magischer Realismus, Mythen, Geschichte, Kolonialismus, Selbständigkeit, Gesellschaft und mehr verwebt der Autor zu einer unterhaltsamen, fantasievollen und soghaften Geschichte die wie nebenbei noch einiges über die Philippinische Mythologie vermittelt und offen für verschiedene Interpretationen bleibt. Mir hat es grossen Spass gemacht mich überraschen zu lassen und meine Assoziationen und durch das Buch ausgelösten Ideen zu verfolgen ohne mich auf eine definitive Deutung beschränken zu müssen. Zusätzlich ist es Illustriert und mit kleinen Texten versehen, die dem ganzen nochmals etwas Dimension geben. Dem Nachwort durfte ich entnehmen, dass das buch der Start einer Trilogie ist, aber auch als Einzelband ist es fantastisch zu lesen. Ich bin Begeistert!
