This is the 16th book in Christine Feehan's successful vampire romance-series about the 'Carpathians'. The Carpathians are a species of people who live on blood (usually without killing anyone), react badly to sunlight and have supernatural powers, like shapeshifting or speaking mind to mind. Their problem is that only few woman are left and the men get more and more aggresssive over time unless they find their lifemate. If they lose control and start killing people, they turn into ruthless and brutal vampires who are hunted down by their own people. 'Dark Demon' tells the story of how Virkirnoff, an ancient Carpathian vampire hunter, and Natalya, a woman hunted by vampires, become lifemates. Virkirnoff has always hoped to find a nice, gentle lifemate to bring him peace. Instead he finds Natalya - part Carpathian, part wizard, part human - and all trouble. She's a fighter with a dark and hidden past who is everything Virkirnoff never wanted or expected in his lifemate. But he starts appreciating her when they have to fight a conspiracy of vampires and wizards with the goal of murdering the Carpathian prince and destryoing the whole race... This book is good, but it's more an action than a romance novel, which makes it different from the other books in the series. It's an important continuation of the storylines about the vampire conspiracy and that of the wizards. Apart from that it' also connected to 'Dark Destiny' and 'Dark Secret', in which Virkirnoff plays a role and Natalya is introduced.
