problem of urban transformation, especially Jakarta,
where the progress of modernisation is complicated by
the increasingly destitute kampung settlements. In
economic terms, such transformation is readily
identified by the presence of two modes of economy,
that is, the capitalist mode of economy and the
pre-capitalist mode of economy, or the 'bazaar
economy'. As such constitute only a fragment of the
social practices within which the Indonesian society
is produced and reproduced. The study examines the
dual image of Jakarta and concerns the triad of
knowledge-power-space in which the society is
produced and reproduced in the time-space dimension.
Kampung as a locale of social practices, especially
those of the low-income urban population, is
investigated in this regard. Dominant social systems,
which control allocative and authoritative resources,
primarily govern the spatial formation of Jakarta. In
these systems, planners and designers have played
crucial roles in the structuration of society, and of
space.
