in England before the mid-15th but also one of the
most contentious parliaments in medieval England,
has long been acknowledged. It lasted,with two
adjournments, from 1 March until Christmas. Its
length was partly due to the commons obstinate
refusal to grant taxes until the king had conceded
their demands. The idea behind this book is to shed
light both on some central aspects of Henry IV''s
rule and on the role of the English parliament
during the later middle ages. It also examines
England''s relations with France and its other
neighbors during Henry IV''s reign, which had a more
significant effect on the course of the 1406
parliament than has previously been realized,as well
as influencing the famous act for the inheritance of
the throne.The discovery of more than 50 additional
unenrolled private petitions submitted during the
parliament of 1406 add more details to items already
on the roll. In addition, the discovery of these
petitions helps us to see why the majority of
private petitions submitted to any parliament were
not recorded on the roll,while a few were
