The maverick, miniature musical genius that is Prince was at his height when the rest of the music world was mired in conformity, and his work from that time continues to astonish and amaze in equal measure. His 1980s masterpieces include "1999", "Purple Rain" and "Sign o' the Times", a trio of albums featuring incredible sustained inventiveness and quality, out of a total of nine superb records released in this decade, during a torrent of productivity. Prince has of course continued to make remarkable albums and his sold-out shows at London's O2 Arena in 2008 illustrate his continued relevance. But the albums he made and the shows he played in the 1980s remain - and likely will always remain - the highest watermark of his career. Prince - In The 1980s explores and reviews Prince’s work throughout the decade that launched him. Featuring contributions and analysis from friends, colleagues, fellow musicians and other notable figures, archive interviews with the man himself, rare and classic performances, liberal film footage and a host of other features, this programme is the premier overview and celebration of the music and influence of the man who has been known by a number of different monikers, but whom the world at large knows and loves as Prince.
