«Stanley Porter has explored the significance of verbal aspect as a category for the investigation of the Greek of the New Testament, and has produced some important conclusions. His work is creative, but also meticulous in its attention to detail. He takes full account of recent developments in linguistics and argues on the basis of evidence from a wide range of primary sources. Exegetes will need to reconsider some traditional assumptions about the adequacies of grammatical models which depend solely on tense distinctions. Dr. Porter has anticipated possible objections to his arguments and for this reason has considered such issues as the possible influence of its Semitic background on the language of the New Testament.
