Basics Fashion Design 13: Sewing Techniques is intended for new undergraduates embarking on a fashion course with no prior experience of clothing and for those that want to develop a more creative process to their current work. It provides basic information and suitable activities for less experienced students and encourages practices and challenges to those who wish to develop more individual approaches to sewing and construction. Chapter one provides an overview of the reasons why consumers choose certain types of clothing and the social and psychological factors associated with those choices. Initially, this is designed to help the student closely examine contemporary fashion clothing to recognise and evaluate essential details and components. The approach used throughout the book encourages the student to practice different sewing techniques, reflect on the learning process and apply them (using industrial and domestic equipment). Each chapter is supported by an activity that prepares the reader for the next challenge; each time building upon their experience and linking the relationship between seams, components and garments.
The case studies and interviews provide an insight into industry standard practice. There is also a discussion of the essential links between design, pattern cutting, fabric selection and sewing techniques and provides the student with more complex construction challenges based around the fit and finish of a garment. The final chapter explores the use of new technology and traditional sewing methods and the advantages these present to today's designer. Throughout the book, Jenny Prendergast encourages the reader to consider how the various techniques can be used in creative applications through unconventional sampling - inviting them to develop ideas from photographs and sketches and then use them as part of the design process.
