In 1853 the eccentric Englishwoman Jane Dogby, disappointed after several stormy love affairs and three divorces, decides to travel alone to the Middle-East towards Palmyra where "amongst the golden and rosy ruins or under a sparkling moon" she falls for El Mezrab, her young translator and escort. He initiates her to the nomadic life of the Bedouins and so she becomes an anticomformist symbol of her time.
One century later, Amalia Ralli, trying to get away from her failed marriage to the Greek movie star Michalis Rallis, arrives at Damascus, invited by an old school friend from the Saint Joseph lyceum. The journey in the desert is for Amalia a revelation; and exotic Palmyra becomes the spectacular scenery of an unexpected love.
In 2010 an equally unexpected coincidence brings Jenny Ralli, Amalia's daughter, to Syria, where she pursues a fresh start in this unknown country. But she will get right amidst turmoil and civil war as well as the truth which turns her everyday life upside down revealing a dark past.
Ifigenia Theodorou was born in Salonica. She studied French Literature at the University of Salonica. "The Flavour of the Desert" is her third novel. Her novel "Melek stands for Angel" (Ellinika Grammata 2001) was a literary bestseller and a candidate for the literary magazine Diavazo Prize.
