Dark Possession ist fast bis zum Ende oberflächlich und lieblos gehalten. An einigen Stellen könnte man vermuten, dass nicht Christine Feehan die Autorin ist sondern eine andere Person. Die Liebesszenen, die in den vorherigen Bänden zwar richtig heiß waren, aber dennoch sinnlich blieben, muten jetzt doch stärker in Richtung Erotik an(was zwar an sich nicht schlecht ist, aber einfach nicht zum Stil der Serie passt). MaryAnn war mir persönlich aus Dark Destiny als warmherzige, gütige Frau in Erinnerung, die ihr Leben denen gewidmet hat, die Traumata erlitten haben oder Hilfe brauchten. Davon ist hier nichts mehr zu sehen, vielmehr wird sie zu einem richtig unsympathischen Modepüppchen, das sich mehr Sorge um ihre Markenklamotten macht als um ihre aktuelle Situation, das lässt die Autorin leider als roten Faden durch das gesamte Buch stark im Vordergrund. Von ihrer Güte ist kaum noch etwas zu spüren, außer hie und da im Ansatz. Gestört hat mich auch ihre seltsame Wandlung von der unabhängigen Frau, die sich gegen alles sträubt, zur plötzlich liebenden Gefährtin, das "wann hat sie sich verliebt" ist nicht ein Höhepunkt, sondern geschieht dann auf einmal. Manolito bleibt auch eher oberflächlich. Sein ständiger Kampf zwischen der Realität und der Schattenwelt ist etwas verwirrend, und das Ganze wird dann auch noch durch MaryAnns Geheimnis verkompliziert, sodass es schwierig ist, seinen Charakter(den echten, nicht den beeinflussten)herauszulesen. Die Hintergrundgeschichte und die Liebesgeschichte sind- wenn man nur das Gesamtbild betrachtet- interessant und spannend, dann aber leider durch viel hin und her zu ungeordnet und schlecht arrangiert. 3 Sterne noch für die Story an sich, für MaryAnn würde ich nichtmal 1 Stern vergeben- sorry.

This is the 18th book in Christine Feehan's successful vampire romance-series about the 'Carpathians'. The Carpathians are a species of people who live on blood (usually without killing anyone), react badly to sunlight and have supernatural powers, like shapeshifting or speaking mind to mind. Their problem is that only few woman are left and the men get more and more aggresssive over time unless they find their lifemate. If they lose control and start killing people, they turn into ruthless and brutal vampires who are hunted down by their own people. In 'Dark Celebration' Manolito DeLeCruz, who is very close to turning vampire, first sees MaryAnn Delaney and recognizes her as his lifemate. Since she's under the protection of some powerful Carpathians and professes that she's not interested in becoming a lifemate, Manolito 'solves' the problem by having a blood exchange and keeping MaryAnn from remembering it. Soon after, he is severely injured but survives. This story is continued in 'Dark Possession': When Manolito almost gets killed, Mary Ann suffers terribly from the loss of her lifemate without knowing why she's so depressive. Stuck in the South American jungle where she went to help some abused jaguar women, the city girl feels completely in the wrong place. And when Manolito finally wakes up, he is stilll half in an Underworld to which Carpathians go after death. Vampires want to use him to return to the world and destroy the Carpathians. Their allies, several wizards, vampires and jaguars, attack MaryAnn and the jaguar women. But Mary Ann has some unsuspected powers herself and proves more than a match not just for dominant Manolito, but also the conspirators who want to destroy the Carpathians and jaguar... I was disappointed with this book for two reasons: a) The events in 'Dark Celebration' promised a great book, but Feehan completely turned this around. For example: Here Manolito died and was brought back, in 'Celebration' it was said he was well and just needed time to heal. His dominant way of claiming his lifemate didn't really fit to the development in 'Possession' either. b) Feehan stuffed too much into this one book for my taste. The Underworld, a new race of Shapeshifters, Mary Ann's problems with her past, herself, her atitude towards men and her lifemate, the jaguar, ... I think it would have been better to use a bit less and deal with that in more depth. c) I didn't really enjoy the Underworld-theme. In places it was illogical and in general quite negative. I could have done without that plotline. All in all, the book isn't a complete loss, but I think it could have been a lot better.
