The book is about Plains Cree cultural life in the 60s on an Indian reservation in central Alberta, Canada. It is from the point of view of the central character, a teenage girl by the name of Phyllistine. She is attending junior high school on the reserve and she is about as sassy as sassy can get. Her Kokum (grandmother) worries about her opinionated character, as well as her father...who says so right to her face. But Phyllistine thinks that she knows it all and that no one can tell her anything different other than what she thinks. There is Plains Cree spirituality interwoven into her thinking as she hobbles between her traditional world and the world of the "e;whiteman"e;. She loves her family and she has many long conversations with them about life. This is where she learns about her history, her culture and her spirituality.
