[Identity - Habitus - Conformity. A Cultural History of Württemberg Ducal Scholarship in Early Modern Times]
The ducal scholarship / convent in Tübingen, founded in 1536, was an important education institution for Protestant theologians for centuries and well known beyond Württemberg.
Gifted students who studied at Tübingen University received free board and lodging at the convent. On the other hand, the living conditions of these scholarship holders were characterized by strict control and sanctioning.
Götz Homoki is the first to examine the effects of ducal sponsorship on the identity and habitus of ducal scholarship holders in the early modern period. On the basis of self-testimonies, he makes the everyday actions and experiences of individual scholarship holders comprehensible and shows that they differed significantly from the excessive habits of gambling, dancing, carousing, or brawling students.
The result is a multifaceted contribution to the history of southwestern Germany as well as to the cultural history of the pre-modern university.
