Pilgrimage into God: A Study of John Main'sMeditation-Oriented Spirituality is a comprehensiveinvestigation of the heritage of the Benedictine monk JohnMain (1926 - 1982). This founder of a worldwide movementfor Christian meditation understands meditation as anintentional transcending of all mental processes. Contraryto popular opinion, which associates meditation uniquelywith Eastern traditions, Main considers meditative practiceto be essential and central to Christian faith. This studynot only explores Main's views on practise, but also looksinto his theology, his understanding of spiritual growth andthe (ideal) contexts for achieving such growth. It does thisby critically situating Main's spiritual teaching within theChristian tradition and exploring its relation to CharlesTaylor's interpretation of the modern spiritual condition. This study also aims at exploring how Main's heritage maycontribute to illuminating Christian spiritual life today.Sicco Claus studied theology and philosophy. He currently works asreligion and philosophy teacher at Gymnasium Haganum, TheHague, is a meditator, and member of the World Community forChristian Meditation.
