"Middlemarch" ist eine sozial-kritische Schilderung eines typischen englischen Ortes im 19. Jahrhundert, wobei George Eliot sich nicht der satirischen Schwarz-Weiß-Malerei eines Charles Dickens bedient, sondern ihre Kritik unterschwellig durch genaue Personen- und Situationsschilderungen an den Leser bringt. Die beiden Hauptakteure in dem sehr umfangreichen Werk sind Dorothea Brooke und Dr. Lydgate.
Dorothea Brooke hat so gar nichts mit den überheblichen, gelangweilten Damen der oberen englischen Gesellschaft gemein: Statt sich für Kleidung und Schmuck zu interessieren engagiert sie sich lieber für sozial Schwache und entwirft Wohnungen für ihre Landarbeiter. Als sie den zurückhaltenden, aber mit dem Verfassen eines weltbewegenden Lehrwerks beschäftigten Gelehrten Casaubon kennenlernt, hofft sie auf einen Gleichgesinnten getroffen zu sein, sie verliebt sich in ihn und bald wird geheiratet. Doch diese Ehe ist zum Scheitern verurteilt, nachdem Dorothea erkennen muss, dass sie die Fähigkeiten ihres Mannes maßlos überschätzt hat. Als sie sich seinem leichtlebigen, künstlerisch begabten Cousin freundschaftlich annähert, quittiert ihr Mann dies mit einem recht böswilligen Testament.
Die zweite Hauptperson, Dr. Lydgate, ist ein ambitionierter junger Arzt, der die Medizin durch seine wissenschaftlichen Studien voranbringen will und sich, ähnlich wie Dorothea, auch dem Elend der ärmeren Bevölkerungsschichten nicht verschließt. Doch seine hochtrabenden Ideen scheitern an seiner engstirnigen und korrupten Umgebung und den selbstsüchtigen Forderungen seiner schönen, aber egoistischen und an gesellschaftlichem Aufstieg interessierten Ehefrau.
George Eliot beschreibt nicht nur ein paar Personen, sondern eine ganze Kleinstadt, mit vielen verschiedenen Charakteren, Ambitionen, Problemen, Hintergrund und Lebensbewältigung, die alle durch ihren Wohnort und die darin notwendigen Interaktionen mehr oder weniger verflochten sind, so dass ein umfassendes Gesellschaftsbild Englands im 19. Jahrhundert entsteht. Das führt zu einem sehr umfangreichen Werk, das sich aber zu lesen lohnt.
