Thought-provoking thriller

Thala am 02.07.2024

Bewertungsnummer: 2235785

Bewertet: Buch (Taschenbuch)

"One of our kind" from Nicole Yoon is compared with "The Stepford wives meet Get Out" and even though I have not yet read "The Stepford Wives", I absolutely see parallels to the movie "Get Out". You could also compare this book with titles like "The other black girl" or "Lakewood". The overall question of this book might be "How do you overcome racism?" The protagonist Jasmyn who works as a public defender is a constant human rights activist. Being a mother herself, she wants to see her son Kamau thrive and not to make the same racist experiences as she did. So when her husband King supposes to move to Liberty, the so-called Black utopia, she agrees for the sake of their son. The story was told from Jasmyn's POV and it was sad and exciting at the same time. I was always guessing what could be the big mystery behind the Wellness Center. At the end, I finally got to know the whole truth. The end made me think a lot. As always, Nicola Yoon's writing style is excellent. I will put "The Stepford wives" on my reading list as well. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes to read social-critical thrillers.
