Fuel subsidies in Bolivia are one of the longest and most controversial chapters of the country's economic policy. Its origin dates back to the nationalization of oil in 1937 during the government of Germán Busch, when Yacimientos Petrolíferos Fiscales Bolivianos (YPFB) was created and state control over domestic prices of oil derivatives was established for the first time with the aim of keeping them low for the population.
