Comparison of two canopy shapes (hedgerow, ball-shaped) - that is, a comparison of two pruning techniques (hedgerow pruning, traditional pruning) - on the "Washington Navel" orange variety, planted at a spacing of 3.5 x 3 meters. The height of the hedge is 2.65 m, the width of its upper part is 0.5 m, and that of its lower part is 1.5 m; the hedge forms a 10° angle with the vertical. The study of spring shoot elongation shows a sigmoid growth curve, asymmetrical relative to an inflection point, for both the hedge and the ball-shaped forms on the SE and NW sides of the tree. This growth curve is highly significantly described by the Verhulst model. Hedge pruning resulted in the highest maximum growth rate and the latest inflection point on the SE side of the canopy, namely (Vmax = 9.22 mm/day, T = 52 days), compared to the ball-shaped form on the same side (Vmax = 4.16 mm/day, T = 44 days). This indicates improved spring vegetative growth in hedge-pruned plants compared to those pruned into a ball shape.
