Between 1869 and 1882, Nietzsche developed a philosophy of culture that contains aspects relevant to contemporary historical theory. This philosophy of culture is grounded in a profound reflection on history, in its dual aspect: as human experience in time and as knowledge of that experience. For Nietzsche, culture and history are the two sides of human life; his entire philosophy is based on this premise. Thus, his reflections on metaphysics, science, aesthetics, politics and ethics can contribute both to understanding his historical thought and to reflecting on how these five factors interrelate within a theory of history. These elements shape Nietzsche's historical philosophy of culture. Here, his historical thought will be examined through the consideration of six themes present in his work: culture, universal history, ancient Greece, modernity, Agon and the morality of exceptional men. Finally, through this development, the historical philosophy of culture will be presented in the form of a universal history, which is the historical mode of thought adopted by Nietzsche in line with his principal interlocutors: Goethe, Schiller and Burckhardt.
