"Abeng is a solid achievement, a book that offers a wealth of history and culture. [Cliff's] perception of character, her receptivity to sensuous detail, her rendering of the language, make our journey a richly textured experience."

    Buch (Taschenbuch)

    Jamaican history

This book is 40 years old but you can’t tell while reading it. The accuracy of her observations and the timely relevance of the topics make this book a modern read, though not exactly a page-turner. With its 170 pages this seems like a fast way to add another book to your annual reading goal. Hehe, try again. Few pages, but all the more substantial. The narrator feeds us bits of Jamaican history and folklore in between the story of her main character Clare, a bi-racial girl who tries to find her own identity. Since our characters are not aware of the narrator’s voice and knowledge, it’s a very genius way to show how important it is to know your history, and how dangerous it is not to. A fascinating book that taught me a lot about Jamaican history. Not an easy read but an important one.
