Luba in America spotlights Gilbert Hernandez's most beloved Love & Rockets character. Luba, of course, was the central figure of Hernandez's Palomar, the south-of-the-border town that Gilbert documented for 15 years in the original Love & Rockets series (1981-1996). In this collection, however, we find Luba has moved to America, starting an entirely fresh new chapter in her life. The book begins with Luba traveling to the big city, supposedly having left Palomar to pave the way for her husband to join her in America. Readers quickly discover, however, that she has a direr mission. Luba fears that her political history has left a threat to her family from the old country, and she believes that the only way to end this threat lies in America. The resulting action is an awesome blend of political intrigue, sexuality, and Gilbert's characteristically human portrayal of his characters, most notably his women.
