The book ""Hollis Street Church: From Mather Byles To Thomas Starr King, 1732-1861, Two Discourses"" by George Leonard Chaney is a historical account of the Hollis Street Church in Boston, Massachusetts, USA. The book is divided into two discourses, each covering a different period in the church's history. The first discourse covers the period from 1732 to 1800, during which time the church was led by the controversial and charismatic minister Mather Byles. Byles was known for his fiery sermons and his support of the British during the American Revolution, which caused a rift between him and his congregation. Despite this, Byles remained a beloved figure in Boston until his death in 1788.The second discourse covers the period from 1800 to 1861, during which time the church was led by a series of ministers, including Thomas Starr King, who was known for his support of abolitionism and his efforts to promote unity between the North and South during the Civil War. The book also covers the church's role in the abolitionist movement and its involvement in various social and political causes throughout its history.Overall, ""Hollis Street Church: From Mather Byles To Thomas Starr King, 1732-1861, Two Discourses"" provides a detailed and fascinating look at the history of one of Boston's most important churches and the role it played in shaping the city and the nation. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
