Wendy Perriam's 14th novel tackles issues such as old age, infidelity and personal responsibility with her familiar sensitivity and almost painfully acute eye for detail. Yet though these issues may seem portentous and depressing, it would be difficult to find a more gently humorous novel than this one - only someone of Perriam's talent could describe Christmas dinner in the nursing home from hell and leave the reader sobbing with laughter and distress simultaneously. Lorna is locked into a tedious marriage with Ralph, who seems to live only for his work, his pipes and his whisky. The other party in the relationship is Lorna's Monster, a personification of the panic attacks which threaten to overwhelm her without warning, and with increasing frequency. Lorna is just about managing to cling on to some semblance of normality when she has to go to hospital for an operation on her bunions. The operation is a disaster and she is sent to Oakfield Nursing Home over the Christmas period to recover. Enter one of the most exhilarating cast of characters in modern fiction, ranging from the hypochondriac nurse Sharon to the deliciously sexy Oshoba. Life at Oakfield is purgatory - inefficiency and neglect are rife - yet Perriam's acid humour avoids sentimentality and pathos. Just as Lorna's life seems to be taking a turn for the better - a new job in prospect, and a deeply satisfying affair with Oshoba, which Perriam describes with her customary talent for the erotic - Ralph announces that the business is in crisis and their whole future is on the line. In addition, a visit to her guardian, Aunt Agnes, forces Lorna to confront several unpalatable truths about her own childhood. Almost too late, Lorna realizes how much Agnes means to her. This is a novel with a warning about how easy it is to be deceived by appearances. Time and again Lorna misjudges those around her, with dire consequences. But in the course of the book she acquires both true courage and humility. Witty and delightful, this is a wonderful read, but also a powerful condemnation of the appalling conditions endured by elderly residents in many sub-standard care homes. (Kirkus UK)
