A Manual of Heraldry: Historical and Popular is a comprehensive guide to the history and practice of heraldry, written by Charles Boutell and originally published in 1863. The book provides a detailed overview of the origins and development of heraldry, as well as the various symbols and designs used in coats of arms and other heraldic devices. Boutell's work covers a wide range of topics, including the different types of arms (personal, corporate, and territorial), the rules governing their use and display, and the symbolism behind the various charges and devices used in heraldry. He also provides a detailed description of the various components of a coat of arms, such as the shield, helm, crest, and motto, as well as the various tinctures (colors) and metals used in heraldry. In addition to its practical value as a guide to the practice of heraldry, A Manual of Heraldry is also a valuable historical resource, providing insights into the social and cultural context in which heraldry developed. Boutell discusses the role of heraldry in medieval society, as well as its continued importance in the modern world.Overall, A Manual of Heraldry: Historical and Popular is a comprehensive and authoritative guide to the art and science of heraldry, and an essential resource for anyone interested in the history and symbolism of coats of arms and other heraldic devices. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
