The ancient Athenian Agora is one of the most important archaeological sites in Greece. In antiquity, it was the hub of the city’s public life, and its buildings were centers for political, religious, and trading activities. Today, a combination of ancient literary accounts and modern excavations allows us to gain a rich understanding of daily life in the Agora and its importance for Greek society. This book provides a comprehensive introduction to the development and current state of the excavations at this outstanding historical site. Furthermore, the reader is invited to discover the various aspects of fieldwork techniques, conservation, and record keeping, and their development since 1931, when the American School of Classical Studies at Athens (ASCSA) had begun working in the Athenian Agora. The book is illustrated throughout with both archival and modern large-format images, and up-to-date maps and plans, giving insight into over 75 years of excavations in the Athenian Agora.
