Data sets in large applications are often too large to fit into the computer's internal memories. The resulting input/output (I/O) communications between internal memory and the lower external medium (such as disks) can present a major performance bottleneck. Cluster computing platforms collections of non-dedicated systems (e.g. PCs) -- based on low cost hardware, provide a computer architecture solution. This publication discusses such clusters, and affordable I/O systems.
