L'étalement urbain en Suisse n'a jamais été aussi prononcé qu'à l'heure actuelle et, pourtant, il ne cesse d'augmenter. Entre 1951 et 2002 uniquement, il a doublé. Un nombre croissant de terres agricoles aux sols arables pré cieux disparaissent irrémédiablement. Des paysages dignes de protection perdent petit à petit leur identité. Les conséquences à long terme sont alarmantes. Afin d'exprimer l'étalement urbain en chiffres, nous avons développé quatre nouvelles mesures, que nous avons appliquées à l'ensemble de la Suisse au cours de la période s'échelonnant de 1935 à 2002. Les résultats obtenus démontrent que les tendances actuelles vont clairement à l'encontre du développement durable, un objectif faisant partie de la constitution fédérale suisse depuis 1999. La nécessité d'agir est urgente.
Urban sprawl in Switzerland has never been as bad as it is now - yet it continues to grow apace. Between 1951 and 2002 alone, it doubled. This development is breathtaking. Prime farmland is disappearing for ever, and landscapes that should be protected are losing their unique aesthetic. The long-term consequences are alarming. To express the scale of urban sprawl in figures, four new metrics were applied to Switzerland for the period 1935-2002. The results show that today's settlement trends clearly contradict the goal of sustainability, enshrined in the federal constitution since 1999. There is urgent need for action.
