Cyprus, the idyllic 'island of Aphrodite' is better known as a site of conflict and division between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots, rather than for its film. Constantinides and Papadakis want to rectify this dearth of information by discussing the work of a new generation of filmmakers striving to engage with the island's traumatic legacies: anti-colonial struggles, post-colonial instability, interethnic conflict and war. Beginning from the cinema of the 1960s when the island became a republic, it focuses on the recent decades and filmmakers currently exploring issues of conflict, memory, identity, nationalism, migration, gender and globalization, as well as the work of filmmakers who chose to cooperate across the ethnic divide. There is a lack of academic research on the subject of Cypriot Cinema Studies. Yet, films from young Cypriot filmmakers, like Dervish Zaim, are beginning to feature in top international film festivals and to acquire significant audiences in Turkey (and others in Greece). This book will utilise a methodology which engages all necessary parameters for an illuminating critical discussion: historical, theoretical, comparative (Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot cinemas in relation to regional film cultures/practices), and diasporic. The volume will focus on in-depth discussions of selected key films. While we will develop a discussion based on the ideological model of film analysis and theory, other models will be applied in order to offer a complete understanding of motifs, patterns and ideologically informed cinematic practices produced in Cypriot cinemas. The close analysis of Cypriot films can illustrate the dominant themes and narrative structures, and how these interact with the socio-political and historical contexts of the films. In its attempt to offer a broad understanding of Cypriot cinemas the volume will visit other forms of local cinema which break away from dominant paradigms. Thus, the appropriation of other transnational trends by Cypriot filmmakers will be explored (vacation film, DIY cinema, the theme of immigration, film genre) in relation to the search for a 'national cinema'.
