Scholars have described how the novel "rose" alongside the autonomous liberal subject in the eighteenth century, how it incorporated and resembled new commodities, and how it came to dominate the literary marketplace. But, we ask, how does poetry fit into this narrative? Eighteenth-Century Poetry and the Rise of the Novel Reconsidered capitalizes on a recent resurgence in critical attention to poetry by exploring how it might complicate or enrich traditional accounts of the novel's rise. Forging original connections between the period's poems and novels, the contributors meditate on how poetry illuminates eighteenth-century ideas about people, their world, realism, novelty, and modernity. We contend that the collisions and collusions between poetry and the novel point to an intriguingly different account of both the cultural and literary history of eighteenth-century England.
