Common warts are small, rough, fleshy, pink or red and grainy skin growths (like a cauliflower) often with pattern of tiny black dots (clotted blood vessels), that occur singly or in multiples. Warts are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV), which is contagious and are transmitted by touch. Certain types of HPV may appear in the genital area and cause serious disease such as cancer of the cervix.
Warts are more common in a moist environment and usually enter the body in an area of broken skin. HPV may spread directly by person-to-person contact, but also through contact with an object used by a person with the human papillomavirus. The virus also can spread to other places on the body of the person with warts.
Warts occur most often on the fingers, hands and soles of the feet (plantar warts). Genital warts appear in the pubic area, on the genitals, in or around the anus and the vagina. Flat warts are smoother, flatter, and smaller than other warts and they generally occur on the face, neck, hands, knees and legs. Filiform or digitate warts, a thread- or finger-like wart, most common appear especially near the eyelids and lips. Mosaic warts, a group of tightly clustered plantar-type warts, commonly occur on the hands or soles of the feet. Periungual warts, a cauliflower-like cluster of warts, occur around the nails.
