Near Infrared (NIR) spectroscopy offers a non-destructive, non-invasive and portable solution for many analytical problems associated with the identification and quantitative characterisation of heritage materials. Due to its simplicity of operation, NIR spectroscopy has found its way into routine collection surveys and thus importantly contributes to collection management on a bigger scale. In addition, NIR hyperspectral imaging is fast becoming the technique of choice for understanding compositional distribution as well as the distribution of quantitative chemical properties in works of art, something which is difficult to achieve by any other technique at the required scale of a whole object, particularly for organic component materials.
The editors have brought together contributors at the forefront of the new techniques to produce a reference volume for researchers, students and practitioners that will encourage the application of these techniques to a wide range of art, historic and archaeological materials.
