Setting out to provide the anthropological foundation for the form’s power, The Origins of the Image Act synthesizes the results of research on prehistory and protohistory conducted over the last three decades within an art history framework. Fossil inclusions in hand axes allow for a material and philosophical determination of the “iconic difference” (in Gottfried Boehm’s terminology), which is fundamental to an understanding of the image act.
