Zu den Erstaunlichkeiten der DDR gehörte der Umstand, dass es neben dem »einheitlichen sozialistischen Bildungssystem« ein vielfältiges konfessionell bzw. kirchlich gebundenes Bildungswesen gab. Dieses reichte von Kindergärten, Schulen und Konvikten über Vorseminare, Berufsausbildungen, Fort- und Weiterbildungen oder kirchliche Hochschulen bis zu Bildungshäusern, Evangelischen Akademien, Filmdiensten, Kunstdiensten und einem ausdifferenzierten Mediensystem. Es bestand überwiegend aus Einrichtungen in Trägerschaft von Kirchen oder Religionsgemeinschaften, im Einzelfall, etwa den Theologie-Sektionen an den Universitäten, aber auch aus staatlich getragenen Institutionen. Die Anzahl der beteiligten Institutionen und Bildungsformen summiert sich auf rund 1.000. Mit dem hier vorliegenden Handbuch wird eine Lücke in der Dokumentation der DDR-Bildungsgeschichte geschlossen.

Astonishingly, the GDR had, in addition to the »unified socialist education system«, a diverse confessional or ecclesiastically bound education system. This ranged from kindergartens, schools and halls of residence to pre-seminars, vocational training, postgraduate training and further education or theological seminary to educational institutions, Evangelical academies, film services, art services and a differentiated media system. It consisted mainly of institutions sponsored by churches or religious communities, though in individual cases, such as the theology sections at the universities, also of government-supported institutions. The number of participating institutions and forms of education adds up to around 1,000.
