At the turn of the millennium, Michael Fewer, author of eleven books on walking and travel, including the anthology, A Walk in Ireland, set out to establish an east to west, cross-country walking route across Ireland. This is his account of his 180-mile route over mountains, across bogland, along canal and river banks, and through towns and villages. This is a traveler's tale of discovery of a unique cross-section of a hidden Ireland. He weaves in and out between the natural world of plants and wildlife and the human one of grand buildings, little ruins, farms, pubs, and cottages. Interspersed with musings and information on history, architecture, and folklore, and laced with colorful lively local dialogue from chance encounters, this is an elegy for a land undergoing great changes.
