Everybody has a story to tell ...

... and all the characters in this story contribute to the layer upon layer of humanity which the author slowly, piece by piece, peels back to reveal the full story. Initially, it took me a while to get into the swing of it but eventually I got into the rythm and really enjoyed it. This book was pipped to the post by 5 votes as best fictional book on Goodreads (No. 1 was the Midnight Library) and I can understand why but in my eyes, it didn't come close to A Man Called Ove. If you have not read that one by the same author, I can highly recommend it. And for once the book and the movie were equally as good, just brilliant.

    Fun & Relatable

There are few books in life that you read and think more often than you should. This is one of those books. So many characters and each character has their own backstory. Wonderfully written and beautifully executed. Must read ❤️ PS: It’s a little long but you’ll get used to it.

    It struck a chord

This story is about people (idiots), filled with wisdom, warmth, sincerity, humor, and food for thought before bedtime. Backman is definitely my author. He knows how to lead the reader around by the finger and then explain everything clearly. His writing is simple yet full of meaning. He touches the strings of the soul to the point of tears, because in his characters you can find yourself and your own worries - the ones that make you wonder "Am I enough?"and "Am I a good person?" My very insistent recommendation to get acquainted with Backman!

    Buch (Taschenbuch)

    Amazing

A beautiful books with real characters. 4.5 The writing is weird, emotional, and thought provoking at the same time. The pacing is good and I was never once bored. I enjoyed most of these characters and loved how at the end everything came together and they found each other. I like the conversations that happened in the book about life, morality, parenthood and society and how difficult sometimes all of these actually are. I love the fact that the we got to know random snippets people’s life it was fun. My favourite characters would be Zara because she was so empathetic challenged and had OCD but still somehow she was hilariously blunt. Also Lennart he’s just funny. I was so pleasantly surprised when they got a love story in the end. The character development in the book was sweet especially with Roger. Also Anna-Lena story with her career was surprising too. They chose each other at end. I agree that this story is also about a hostage drama and love and the bridge because it changed peoples life with the incidents involved around it. Something I did not like was the lack of description on Ro’s racial dentity and the bank robbers gender, but I assume that bank robbers gender was hidden because the author wanted to play the readers into thinking, the robber is a man and not guess that she escaped as an estate agent, but again the author played us because she really did not escape as an estate agent but someway else, I don’t have much of anything else to complain because I was enamoured.
